Congratulations on taking the first steps to owning your own business. You are a brave and amazing entrepreneur. You have what it takes. I have put together some thoughts on things that designers come across often when working with new startups! Now there are so many things to think about, and I doubt that you have time to go through an entire list but here are five things that could have an impact on your new business.

Choose a sticky Name
You want a name that will be remembered by your target audience, I believe a name that captures the essence of what you are going to do! But please do a thorough search of names and ensure that your name is not already taken.

Get a domain for your business
Once you’ve chosen a name for your business you have to register a domain, I have worked on corporate identities where the company name had to be changed after the domain was unavailable. I know you are serious about your business so get a domain name to suit your business.

You need a website!
Nowadays a website is no longer a nice to have, it is a rather important element in every business. Not only does a website act as your digital storefront but it adds credibility to your business. And if I may add a word of caution having a website online doesn’t suddenly mean that you’re going to get a lot of business.

Social Media profiles
I would go out on a limb and say you can leave the signage at the door and rather create a social media presence instead. Not only will this help you with your marketing efforts but it will also reserve your name in these channels.

Corporate Stationery
A missing piece in a lot of startup business requirement lists is the use of corporate stationery: Letterheads, Business cards, e-mail signatures, company quote sheets and other branded material. Yes, one can do without. When you are out there networking and marketing yourself don’t you believe in leaving a great impression. Stationery just adds to your credibility.
